Kongsberg Press Release 15.09.2016

A system based on Kongsberg’s Maritime Broadband Radio (MBR) will be used to support oil-spill response operations alongside a diverse range of offshore applications on state-of-the-art unmanned aerial vehicles developed and operated by Norwegian company, Nordic Unmanned.

As a communication link and data-sharing infrastructure solution, without the need for satellite connectivity, Nordic Unmanned will deploy MBR on its drones to enhance communication between aerial and maritime assets. The company specifically states that communication between drone and vessels during oil-spill response operations will benefit significantly, due to the reliable, high speed data link MBR provides.

MBR has already been proven as a highly effective air-to-surface communication tool, during trials with the Norwegian Coastal Administration. A recent North Sea exercise used the system as the communication platform for data exchange and co-ordination of simultaneous operations. Units were mounted on multiple operational assets, including a plane that streamed real-time surveillance video directly to vessels in order to provide a new perspective and a completely different situational understanding.

Nordic Unmanned highlighted the integration of the MBR with its drones during live demonstrations at ONS 2016 in Stavanger. “We are excited to utilise KONGSBERG technology and deliver a state of the art product that can reduce cost and risk,” said Knut Roar Wiig, CEO, Nordic Unmanned.

“MBR is a highly flexible system designed to unite land, air and ground assets, making it suitable for a wide range of operations,” comments Vidar Bjørkedal, VP Sales & Customer Support, Kongsberg Seatex AS. “Since the system’s introduction, we have seen several novel uses for MBR. Nordic Unmanned’s planned use on aerial drones for oil-spill response has the potential to significantly improve these environmentally critical operations.”

Exceeding 50 km sea-level operational range, MBR is a true game changer in interconnectivity between vessels and aerial or land-based assets. It acts as a crucial, cost-effective component in complex multi-asset offshore operations that take place across large areas with multiple teams working simultaneously. MBR supports complete situational awareness through enhanced communication between assets, facilitated by seamless broadband data, voice and HD video transfer between all assets in the network.
