Meet our employees: Vilde Sofie Silseth – Aviation Specialist

Meet Vilde! She is 21 years old and has recently joined the Nordic Unmanned team after graduating from Massey University in New Zealand, with a bachelor’s degree in aviation management. We asked her some questions to get to know her better!

What is the main responsibilities of an Aviation Specialist?

“As an aviation specialist, I research and collect information to support and enable our air operations. There are numerous factors that requires consideration for an air operation to be successful. I mainly work with laws and regulations, ensuring that the company and our aircrafts meets the necessary requirements to obtain the flight permits needed for future and current missions

This is a comprehensive task, as we fly internationally, regulations can differ depending on the country. Our aircraft and staff must be considered airworthy by the appropriate governmental bodies to be able to deploy quickly, as some of our missions may be time sensitive. Furthermore, being governmentally recognized across Europe enables us to remain a pioneer within the field of unmanned aviation.”

What made you interested in aviation?

“Aviation has always excited me. The rapid development of the industry over the last century shows the potential of both humans and new technology, which to some degree is astonishing. Working across borders, coordinating with different governments and organisations, as well as being a part of such a dynamic environment appeals to me.

There is always a new challenge that requires a new way of thinking and the aviation industry, whether it be unmanned or manned, has an incredible amount of potential. There are no limits – and that excites me. New technology is continuously being developed, further pushing the industry towards safer and more efficient methods and aircrafts. With Nordic Unmanned at the forefront of the development of the industry, I am thrilled to be a part of that journey.”

Why is it important for a drone company to have an Aviation Specialist?

“It is important to recognize that as the drone industry is growing as rapidly as it is, some tactical issues may arise. Air space and air congestion is already a large issue for the manned aviation industry and with the unmanned industry becoming increasingly popular globally, it is an issue that demands our attention. Coordinating unmanned and manned aviation is a significant challenge, yet one that must be considered, to further enhance safety and efficiency. Furthermore, as the industry is developing, so are the regulations

Globally, drone regulations are becoming stricter and more comprehensive to prevent any unsafe airmanship. To remain a pioneer within the field of unmanned aircraft, we must have an extensive understanding of the different regulations in each respective country to ensure we are complying with them. My position and my background allows me to support this work, alongside my teammates and supervisors.”

What are you looking forward to in 2021?

“I am looking forward to an exciting year, both internationally and domestically. We have a number of exciting projects ahead of us and I am eager to continue the new year in the same fashion as the old one – though hopefully a little bit less characterised by a certain ongoing pandemic.”

We look forward to 2021 with Vilde on our team!
